Tour the European Green Capital with NAVIGON
After Stockholm, Hamburg is the European Green Capital of 2011. An information pavilion close to Hamburg Central Station acts as a central contact point. In addition, highlights in the coming month include unusual harbour boat trips, two art exhibitions featuring works by Gerhard Richter and the 30th stage anniversary of the musical Cats. NAVIGON City Highlights show you exactly what else the “gateway to the world” has to offer.
Hamburg, 25 January 2011 – Hamburg attracts over 70 million visitors every year with its maritime charm. But the metropolis on the River Elbe has far more to offer than just its harbour, fish market and Reeperbahn. NAVIGON and Hamburg Tourismus GmbH present tips on current events and offer advice as to how visitors can further experience the Hanseatic city.
Everything you need to know about the Green Capital in the information pavilion – the KlimaCampus exhibition
This year, the harbour city carries the title of “European Green Capital”, bestowed upon by the European Commission. The central contact point for information and the starting point for many environmental tours is the information pavilion near the Hamburg Central Station. Running until 6 February, the special multimedia-based exhibition by the KlimaCampus will show how towns can use energy efficiently. The research group has linked up 18 university institutes for climate research since 2007, as well as external research centres. The “Environment has History” exhibition will follow from 9 to 27 February, which shows the development of environmental protection in Hamburg.
Gerhard Richter at the Bucerius Kunst Forum and the Kunsthalle
As of February, Hamburg’s internationally renowned museums will be all about the artist Gerhard Richter. From 5 February, the Bucerius Kunst Forum will be displaying the “Gerhard Richter – Images of an Era” exhibition, in which paintings featuring isolated images from magazines such as Stern can be viewed. The Hamburger Kunsthalle will present “OUT OF FOCUS. After Gerhard Richter” from 11 February. Alongside illustrations by Richter, there are also images by a further 20 contemporary artists. The German painter, sculptor and photographer has been top of the world rankings of living artists six times in the last seven years.
“Ringelnatz an Bord” – the harbour boat trip that is a little different
The next instalment in the “Ringelnatz an Bord” series will take place on 12 February. Actors Gudo Mattiat and Bernie Kämper will recite works by Joachim Ringelnatz on the historic steamer SCHAARHÖRN. It was here that the German author, cabaret artist and painter was promoted to lieutenant in 1917. In addition, passengers will be able to enjoy a three-course candlelit dinner and fine wine. The proceeds of this special three-hour-long harbour boat trip will be put entirely towards the preservation of the SCHAARHÖRN.
Cats is celebrating 30 years on the stage with a guest performance in Hamburg
Fans of musicals have until 5 March to see a very special highlight: Cats will be guesting at the “Heiligengeistfeld” in Hamburg. To celebrate 30 years on the stage, the musical spectacle is touring Germany – performed in a theatre tent that was specifically designed for the show. First stop is the Hanseatic city, where over 20 years ago it became one of the most successful German-language musicals ever.
