On the trail of the jesters: discover Mainz with NAVIGON
As the fifth season draws to a close, the whole of Mainz is eagerly anticipating the Shrovetide procession. However, an exhibition by Karsten Bott, Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet” and a special public viewing of popular German crime series “Tatort” all demonstrate that Mainz has a great deal more to offer besides Carnival. This makes it subject of our NAVIGON City Highlights in February.
Hamburg, 25 February 2011 – “A thrice thundering Helau!” continues to reverberate around the jester’s stronghold of Mainz until Ash Wednesday. NAVIGON and the regional capital Mainz present the traditional Carnival highlight as well as tips for other events happening in the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate.
500,000 jesters follow the traditional Mainz Carnival procession
The Shrovetide procession on 7 March is a must for all Carnival fans. Starting 11.11 a.m. around 9,500 participants begin to wind their way through the centre of Mainz as part of guards, music bands or on floats and celebrate with over half a million dressed up visitors. Typical among the procession are the theme floats where politicians and prominent figures are satirised by way of oversized papier-mâché caricatures. The procession’s ultimate destination is the Fastnachtsbrunnen, a monument around nine metres tall, which is populated with more than 200 bronze figures. Those who purchase a ticket from www.mainz.de are able to follow the spectacular seated in a grandstand.
Kunsthalle Mainz exhibits Karsten Bott’s large-scale collection project
Since 17 February the Kunsthalle Mainz has been presenting artist Karsten Bott’s exhibition entitled “Von jedem Eins”. Until 1 May, visitors can view around 300,000 objects from his “Archive of Contemporary History”, everyday objects which people usually don’t pay a lot of attention to. Visitors make their wayover bridge-like structures whilst viewing items such as tools, packaging, glasses frames and egg whisks, which have all been set up on an area covering some 600 square metres. The Frankfurt-based artist sees his collection of everyday items, which began in 1988, as a form of archaeology preponed to the present. Visitors can find further information at www.kunsthalle-mainz.de.
Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet” at the Mainz State Theatre
At the Mainz State Theatre, ballet lovers can experience Sergei Prokofiev’s musical version of the most famous love story in the world until 27 March. The plot of the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” follows that of the play by William Shakespeare. It tells the tale of two young lovers in Verona, whose families are at enmity with each other. Prokofiev’s ballet version is considered to be the highlight of his musical works. The choreography of the production at the Mainz State Theatre is by Pascal Touzeau. Tickets are available online at www.staatstheater-mainz.de.
Public “Tatort” (“Crime Scene”) in Haddocks bar
A special kind of public viewing event takes place every Sunday in Haddocks bar: in the so-called “living room of the new town” fans of the popular German crime series “Tatort” have the opportunity to watch an episode together. A varying “Tatort” menu provides the perfect culinary accompaniment. After the show, this classic programme can be discussed over a glass of wine.
The City Highlights, put together by NAVIGON and the regional capital Mainz, will guide you to Haddocks and many other bars, restaurants and places of interest. These can be downloaded to your navigation device free of charge from www.navigon.com/fresh. As a result, visitors can truly experience the city motto “Live Mainz” –not just at Carnival time.
