What is public Intent?
Answer:

Applications used by Android can communicate with each other using so-called public intents. With this approach, the calling application does not necessarily have to know the target application, it just calls out to the system, what it wants todo.

Examples are:

•     I want to display a map
•     I want to display an image or to play an MP3 file

The Android system then checks for installed applications that can handle this intent. The system gives the user a choice to choose from a list of suitable applications. The user can define to always handle certain intents with one of the listed applications.

How to hand over a location using “public intent” manual.
